                                                        Gathering for Worship

WORDS OF WELCOME      You may light a candle at home if you wish.

GATHERING WORDS (If you are worshipping with others, you may use two or more voices in a “Call to Worship” style at home).

In times of darkness, the light of God shines forth.

No matter how deep the darkness, it cannot overcome the Light.

We gather in the Light of God’s love, to be assured of God’s presence with us always.

We gather to worship the Giver of Light, the One who shines light in our darkness and gives us hope.

Because the Lord is our Light and our Salvation…       We have nothing to fear!

HYMN OF PRAISE        Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise            #103

OPENING PRAYER     O God of love and light, as sunlight fills the sky this day, so fill us and surround us with your Spirit. You sent your Son, Jesus Christ, Light of the World, to dispel the darkness around us and within us. Shine on us today. As we open our hearts to hear your word for us, may it be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, every good and perfect gift comes to us from You, the Father of Lights. All that we have and all that we is yours already, so we give thanks for the opportunity and privilege of sharing in your ministry to all the world through the giving of these gifts. Bless them and us, that through these gifts and through our lives the light of your grace and love might shine upon others. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Proclaiming and Responding to God’s Word

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON          Isaiah 9:2-3; Isaiah 60: 1-3

Isaiah 9:2-3 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.

Isaiah 60: 1-3

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.Nations will come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

THE GOSPEL LESSON                            John 1: 1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all humankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

This is the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON                                                           A Light in the Darkness

PRAYER ANTHEM                                   The Light Will Come

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

HYMN OF DISCIPLESHIP    Shine, Jesus, Shine      TFWS 2173

BLESSING May the Light of God’s presence go with us to light our way as we, by God’s grace, share God’s light and love with others.

In the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

And all God’s people said, Amen.
