The following litany was prayed during the service.

Litany for Independence Day

Leader: As we celebrate the birth of our nation, and the gifts of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, let us offer our thanks and prayers to God, the giver of all good gifts,

ALL: We give you thanks, O Lord.

Leader: For patriots who dreamed of, and fought for, a free nation,

ALL: We give you thanks, O Lord.

Leader: For the men and women who laid the foundation of our democracy, and who pledged liberty and justice for all,

ALL: We give you thanks, O Lord.

Leader: For those who built this country brick by brick, road by road, town by town,

ALL: We give you thanks, O Lord.

Leader: For all the brave soldiers who fight for our country, now and in days gone by; for all who pay for our freedom by their service, and for those who made the ultimate sacrifice,

ALL: We give you thanks, O Lord.

Leader: For the innovators and artists, poets and teachers, farmers and factory workers; for all those who labor and provide for the common good,

ALL: We give you thanks, O Lord.

Leader:  For this land, with its mountains and valleys, coasts and deserts, fields and meadows,

ALL: We give you thanks, O Lord.

Leader: For our own community, for those who came before us in this place, and for our neighbors near and far,

ALL: We give you thanks, O Lord.

Leader:  We pray, O Lord, for our United States, that we might always be a nation which defends and promotes liberty and freedom, truth and justice for all,

ALL: Gracious Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: That we might always be a nation where all are free to worship and pray,

ALL: Gracious Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: That we might be a beacon of freedom to all those who live under the shadow of terror and hopelessness.

ALL: Gracious Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: That you would grant the blessing of your wisdom to all those who lead, making them mindful of all that has been entrusted to them,

ALL: Gracious Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: That we would be a people who repent from our sins, who are ready to run into your arms of grace.

ALL: Gracious Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Gracious and blessed Lord, God of all nations, bless and defend us and our land; prosper the work of our hands and increase in us your grace and compassion as we continually offer our thanks to you, our Rock and our Salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
