EMMANUEL’S NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*Our United Methodist Committee on Relief has issued an urgent call for Cleaning Kits, also known as Flood Buckets, to support the clean-up efforts taking place in many storm-damaged areas in the U.S. Please see the detailed instructions in the October church newsletter, or on the handouts available at the Sanctuary entrances and check-in tables.

*An Invitation from Amherst Habitat for Humanity: Amherst County Habitat for Humanity is excited to invite you to our Groundbreaking Ceremony in the Town of Amherst. This ceremony will be held at 110 Forest Avenue Amherst, VA (at the corner of North Main Street directly across from Emmanuel United Methodist Church) on Monday, October 10th @ 12:00 p.m. We are blessed to break ground on three homes concurrently. This monumental project allows Amherst County Habitat to serve a total of 14 individuals. Sincerely, Beatrice Booker, Community Outreach Director

*Next Sunday, October 16 is Laity Sunday when we celebrate the ministry of all God’s people. Janette Mears will be our speaker for Laity Sunday.

*Society of St. Andrew Gleaning Opportunities: Gleaning events throughout Virginia have been added to SoSA’s fall schedule. There is an urgent need for volunteers to help harvest produce. The opportunities closest to us are as follows: Bedford County orchardist, Danny Johnson, owner of Johnson’s Apple Orchard has donated all of the beautiful apples to the Society of St. Andrew to be distributed to those in need. The remaining date for gleaning in Bedford County is October 15 (9 a.m. – 12 noon), with more shifts to be added. If anyone is interested in getting a gleaning group together from our church to participate on one or more of these days, please contact Pastor Nancy. You must sign up on the SoSA website before volunteering. For more information and additional opportunities, visit endhunger.org/Virginia  or Volunteer with SoSA. You may also call or email SoSA at 1-800-333-4597 or volunteer@endhunger.org.

*Bible Studies, Sunday School and Prayer Groups to Resume: Our Sunday School classes, Bible Study groups and prayer groups are beginning to relaunch! The Francis Asbury senior adult class will meet in the Mattie Ware Room (upstairs) on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. The Women’s Tuesday Bible Study will resume on Tuesday, October 18 (PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE) at 9:30 a.m. in the Mattie Ware classroom. Additional groups are pending, so watch the announcements for more details. If you are interested in leading a Bible Study or have an idea for a small group, please contact Pastor Nancy.

*Church Halloween Party, Saturday, October 22, has been cancelled.

*HALLEBOOJAH! It’s time to get ready for our annual Halloween-on-the-Lawn event to be held on Monday, October 31 from 5-7 p.m. (Set-up begins at 4:00 p.m.) The Vitality Team invites the congregation to dress up in your Halloween best and join us on the lawn for the festivities. Please bring your own lawn chair. Hot chocolate and treat bags will be distributed to our community trick-or-treaters. Your donations of wrapped candy for the treat bags may be placed in the Narthex tub no later than Sunday, October 23.

*On All Saint’s Sunday, November 6, our church family will remember the members of our congregation and the loved ones of our church family that have passed away since last All Saints’ Sunday (November 7, 2021). If you have a loved one that you would like to include in this observance, please call or send an email to the church office (434-946-7624; office@emmanuelamherst.org), or share the information on the back of your blue “connect with us” form available in the worship bulletin each Sunday. Please tell us your name, the name of your loved one, their relationship to you and the date/approximate date of death if known. We appreciate receiving this information no later than Sunday, October 23.

*Memorial Bricks: Our church provides a way for families to honor and remember loved ones by placing a memorial brick in our church’s Memorial Rose Garden. If you wish to order a memorial brick, please contact Cat Brandell at catbrandell@gmail.com or 434-946-9102. Order forms are available from Cat or from the church office (can be emailed to you). Copies are also located in the Sanctuary. We would like to place an order for this year’s All Saints Observance, so please place your order with Cat no later than this Wednesday,

October 12. Because the roses in our rose garden are not thriving at the present time, we have suspended all new orders for Memorial Rose Bushes until further notice.

*Called Virtual Annual Conference, Saturday, October 29, 9:00 a.m. Church Council Members will receive a link to attend the Conference through their own device, or you may join with others in the church Sanctuary for this meeting.
